👩‍🏫 What are adjectives?

Adjectives describe nouns. They tell us more about a person, place, or thing — like big, beautiful, or happy.
In Spanish, adjectives must match the gender (masculine or feminine) and number (singular or plural) of the noun they describe.

✨ Basic rules for adjective agreement

Noun (Singular)Adjective (Singular)Noun (Plural)Adjective (Plural)
el perro (dog)grande (big)los perrosgrandes
la casa (house)grandelas casasgrandes
el niño (boy)feliz (happy)los niñosfelices
la niña (girl)felizlas niñasfelices
  • If the adjective ends in -o, change it to -a for feminine nouns.

  • If the adjective ends in a consonant, add -es for plural.

💡 Examples

  • El gato negro (the black cat, masculine singular)

  • La gata negra (the black cat, feminine singular)

  • Los gatos negros (the black cats, masculine plural)

  • Las gatas negras (the black cats, feminine plural)

💞 Cultural Connection

When talking about family members or loved ones, adjectives let you express feelings and qualities:

  • Mi abuela es muy cariñosa. (My grandmother is very loving.)

  • Mis amigos son divertidos. (My friends are fun.)

In Colombia, expressing emotion with adjectives is common and warm.

📝 Practice time

  1. Change the adjective to match the noun:

  • el amigoamig___ (friendly)

  • las casasgrande___ (big)

  • la mujerbonit___ (pretty)

  • los niñosfeliz___ (happy)

  1. Translate into Spanish:

  • The happy family → _______________________

  • The tall boy → _______________________

  • The beautiful women → _______________________

  • The small dogs → _______________________

  1. Write a sentence describing a family member using an adjective.

🌟 Tip from Teacher Laura 🍊

Always remember to match adjectives with nouns. Think of them as a team — they must agree to sound natural and correct! With practice, it becomes automatic.
