👩🏫 What are subject pronouns?
Subject pronouns are words that replace the subject of the sentence (the person doing the action).
In English: I, you, he, she, we, they…
In Spanish: yo, tú, él, ella, nosotros… — but they also show gender and formality!
✨ Subject Pronouns in Spanish
Spanish | English | Notes |
---|---|---|
yo | I | |
tú | you (informal) | use with friends, family |
usted (Ud.) | you (formal) | polite – use with strangers, elders |
él | he | |
ella | she | |
nosotros | we (masculine/mixed) | if there's at least one man |
nosotras | we (feminine) | all women |
vosotros | you all (informal, Spain) | not used in Latin America |
vosotras | you all (fem., Spain) | Spain only |
ustedes (Uds.) | you all (formal/informal in Latin America) | Common in Colombia |
ellos | they (masculine/mixed) | |
ellas | they (feminine) | all women |

🌟 Tip from Teacher Laura 🍊
Start using pronouns in daily phrases. Instead of just “hablo español,” say “yo hablo español.” Practice with people around you: tú eres mi amigo, ella es simpática. This helps you think in Spanish — and feel more confident.
